In the afternoon of October 13, I went to the Great Hall of People. Some days ago Nokia told me they have a very important news conference, but they didn’t disclose anything. When I got into the Hubei hall, “Nokia and China Putian building Joint Venture” attracted me.
From the interview I knew Nokia and China Putian will invest 900 million RMB on the JV, that focus on WCDMA and TD-SCDMA. Putian will hold 51% stock share, Nokia hold the rest. As 3G license looms, more and more companies including foreign vendors get into TD-SCDMA.
In the afternoon of October 14, UTstar hold a news conference to introduce their strategies in PT Expo. UTstar changed its logo before the expo, and build the largest booth in its history. I noticed that UTstar became practical now, they stressed PHS is still its basis of future development. Qbox is also its hype, that represents the future fixed and mobile convergence.
On Saturday, I went to BUPT to attend the presentation of Irwin Jacob, who is the founder of Qualcomm and CDMA. Qualcomm will donate 300 thousand dollars to BUPT every year. BUPT awarded Jacob honorary professor for returns.
After the presentation, I ask some questions to him:
1. As you say, convergence is the future direction of telecom industry. Your MediaFLO can achieve convergence between mobile communication and broadcasting. That’s very exciting. But regulation increasingly become one of the biggest problems. You are very experienced in working with regulators. What’s your personal suggestion for the future regulation systems?
2. why did you buy Flarion?
3. how will Qualcomm make money from TD-SCDMA?
In BUPT I saw my 2th book named the Qualcomm Equation. That is very exciting!
Next week will be the busiest time because of PT Expo. How is that? Let’s see it together!
